If you have a dog, you know how hard keeping it in the yard can be. Electric
dog containment systems, also called underground or electric fence, are an affordable alternative to traditional wood or chain-link fence. Electric systems are easy to maintain and can be used both in and outdoors.
Outdoor systems rely on buried cable or a central transmitter and an electronic collar. When your dog runs toward the boundary of the system, the collar emits a warning tone. If the dog is not deterred and continues running toward the system, it will receive a mild electronic correction. The dog will continue to receive more intense corrections if it continues to run toward the unit.
Dog containment systems are effective and humane. Although these systems provide an electronic correction, it will not harm your dog. The correction from the units is similar to the feeling you get when you slide your feet on carpet and then touch a door knob. Correction from the systems is annoying, but it doesn't truly hurt your dog. After your dog learns the boundaries of it, it will receive fewer corrections.
Dogs must be trained to use the devices. You must teach your dog where the boundaries are; systems come with flags so you can clearly mark the perimeter. After about two weeks, you can take the boundary flags down. Written instructions are included in the systems. Some have DVDs or VHS tapes as well.
They are low maintenance; it's as easy as keeping batteries fresh. You will never have to paint or stain a fence. And, you can mow right over tem, which is much easier than mowing around a traditional fence.
Dog containment systems can be set up in any configuration over acres of land. Not all containment systems are for that large of an area; be sure to fully read description for coverage area. Neighbors can use a single system to give their dogs lots of space to explore and exercise in. Or you can use the units to keep your dog away from the pool or road.
Indoor units can be used in any room in the house and only affect the dog wearing the corresponding collar. Indoor systems can be set up with a range of 12-20 feet. When your dog nears the boundary of it, it receives a mild correction. Unlike outdoor systems, indoors don't require any training.
Containment systems for dogs are a great way to let your dog exercise and play without your constant supervision. Professional dog trainers say that these products offer a dependable and safe way to keep your pet contained.
