A pet containment system, also known as underground or electric fence is an effective way to keep your pet safe both in and outdoors. It is a reliable way to keep your pet exercised and happy without your constant monitoring. Outdoors, a containment fence allows the dog to exercise without the danger of running into the street. Indoors, a pet containment system can be used to keep your pet off the furniture or out of the garbage.
Any outdoor system works basically the same way, although they all have variations of tone or correction. A pet fence works with a buried wire or central transmitter and an electronic collar. When the dog gets too close to the boundary of the system, a warning tone sounds. If the dog continues towards the boundary, it will receive a mild electronic correction. The correction will intensify if the dog continues toward the boundary. Once your dog learns the boundaries of the containment fence, it will receive fewer corrections.
The system is designed so it cannot over-correct or harm your pet. The correction from an underground fence is mild, like that of sliding your feet over carpet and then touching a door knob. Correction from the system is annoying, not harmful.
An outdoor containment fence is suitable for dogs 10 pounds and over. Your dog must be trained to use it properly; it usually takes about two weeks. Perimeter flags that come with the unit will teach you and your pet where the boundaries are. When the dog is trained to use the hidden fence, the flags can be removed, making the
underground fence completely hidden. Training is relatively easy; it includes written instructions and possibly a DVD or VHS tape.
A containment system can be used in any configuration in an area as small or as large as you need. Multiple dogs can use the fence; they must wear corresponding collars to ensure appropriate correction.
Another benefit is easy maintenance. It doesn't need to be painted or stained. The electronic pet containment system lasts longer than traditional fences without all the upkeep. Dogs can't dig under an
underground fence. Maintenance is as simple as changing batteries in the dog's collar.
An indoor system can be used in conjunction with the outdoor system. The indoor assembly can be used in any room in the house. Put a transmitter in the room, set the range, put a collar on your pet, and you're done. An indoor outfit provides the same sort of electronic correction as the outdoor
dog containment unit without training.
Professional dog trainers and veterinarians agree that a dog shock fence is a great alternative to traditional fencing or keeping your dog in the house all day. When you buy a containment unit, you are buying peace of mind.
