Synopsis: If your dog wanders off, you should consider buying an electronic dog fence. An Electronic dog fence keeps your dogs safe in an area that you determine. The units cannot be jumped over or dug under. Termites don't eat through an underground dog fence, and you never have to paint them. Lawn care is also easier; you can mow right over the underground unit.

Some neighborhoods don't allow traditional fences. In these places, an electronic model fence is a good alternative because you won't ever see it. Traditional fences can be expensive, but you can install an electric one at a reasonable cost. Maintenance is usually as easy as replacing or recharging batteries.

Although there are many brands of electronic dog fences, they all work basically the same way. It relies on buried wire or transmitters and an electronic collar to keep your dog within the fence. When the dog nears the boundaries of the fence, a warning tone sounds. If the dog continues forward, it will receive a mild electronic correction. If the dog continues toward the electronic fence, the correction will increase.

A portable unit is available for the traveler. This "instant" fence uses a transmitter, not wire, so you can take them anywhere. A portable pet fence plugs into any DC or cigarette lighter outlet.

Neighbors can use an electronic fence to contain several dogs in one large area. An electronic collar is needed for each dog that will be contained in the fence.

Dogs need to be trained with the units. The most important thing is to teach your dog where the boundaries of the system are. The kits come with boundary flags to help with this. The systems come with written instructions; many come with videos or DVDs. Usually after about two weeks, the flags can be removed, and the dog will be trained to use the electronic fence. Don't be discouraged if your dog needs more training time.

Before buying one, make sure your dog's temperament and demeanor are suited to it. Many systems have run-through protection. If you have a large breed or working dog, you may want to purchase a unit with this feature. Don't rely on the fence as your primary containment method until you dog is completely trained to use the system. Remember that maintenance is minimal, but if the batteries don't work, your fence won't do its job.

Although some people are worried about the level of correction, professionals agree that they are a safe, humane way to contain your pet. The correction from the system is the same that you would receive from rubbing your feet on a carpet and then touching a door knob. Once the dog is trained, it will get corrected less frequently. A mild correction is a small price to pay for the freedom your dog will enjoy with these products.
