Will An Electric Dog Fence Work In The Snow?
|
|
If you've looked into buying an electric dog fence for your pet, you've undoubtedly thought of a few questions about the way that pet containment systems work. One of the most common questions that dog owners ask is, "Will an electric dog fence function well in any weather?" |

My fence does not work when the battery freezes leaving my dog to run free. Unless the temperature does not dip below freezing, the system does not work. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hi Kim, Yes. That is correct. The dog fence wire can still push the signal through 3 or 4 feet of snow but the transmitter should not be in below freezing weather. I recommend moving it inside a garage or even the house if possible. If it must be outside then try to insulate it somehow so that it doesn't freeze .. Team K9 Electronics |

jeffrey, you are absolutely correct! For the electric dog fence to work properly the snow should not be more than 3 to 4 feet deep ... |

While the statements in this article are true, there is a caveat. In very snowy areas (such as Minneapolis), the height of the snow in winter can exceed the electrical field set on the electric fence. Hence when the dog approaches the fence line, he/she may be beyond the virtual field and may be able to exit the yard with little or no shock. As such, it may be necessary to artificially increase the field to its maximum during winter. |
