If you are worried that your dog may run onto the road or you just want to keep it away from your flower beds, a
PetSafe fence is for you. A dog fence is an affordable and attractive alternative to traditional chain link, wood, or vinyl fences. An underground fence will never need to be painted, it won't rust, and there aren't any boards to replace. Dogs can't chew through or jump over a
PetSafe underground fence. Mowing over an underground dog fence is much easier than trying to mow around a traditional fence. A PetSafe underground fence is completely hidden once installed so you will only see your beautiful lawn.
How does a PetSafe underground fence work? The system works with three parts: the transmitter, boundary wire, and dog collar. The transmitter with a fence sends radio signals to the boundary wire. The signal is then sent to the dog's electronic collar. If the dog is too close to the boundary of the fence, the collar will emit a beep. If the dog ignores the beep and keeps going toward the boundary, it will receive a mild electronic correction. When the dog steps back into a safe zone, the correction will stop.
Some electronic dog fence units have several levels of correction so correction levels will intensify as the dog gets closer to the boundary. Other systems, like the PRF-3004 In-Ground Radio Fence PetSafe fence, only have one intensity level.
Although a PetSafe fence electronically corrects your dog, it is safe and harmless. The correction is akin to the feeling you get after sliding your feet on carpet and then touching a door knob. The correction from a fence isn't dangerous, but it is strong enough to keep dogs in the safe zone. Many models have built-in safety features to make sure your dog is not over-corrected or corrected unnecessarily.
Some
underground fences are activated by outside sources such as televisions or radios. The PRF-3004W uses safety codes and filters to make sure that only the PetSafe system causes a correction. If your dog gets trapped in the unit correction area, the collar will automatically turn off after 20 seconds to prevent over-correction.
The PRF-3004W has surge protection, and the lifetime warranty on this particular model covers lightening and surge damage. If the boundary wire breaks, an alarm on the transmitter will sound to let you know.
The waterproof collar that is sold with the fence is compact and lightweight. It only weighs 1.5 ounces and measures 2 inches by ¾ inches by ¾ inches. The collar runs on a 3 volt lithium battery that is included with the unit.
Dogs need to be trained to use the systems. Dogs must be taught where the boundaries of the unit are so they know to stay away from them. To do this, boundary flags need to be set up; the PRF-3004W PetSafe fence has 50 boundary flags. After several weeks of training, flags can be removed, but the dog should still be supervised while contained by the fence. After several more weeks, your dog can be safely contained without your supervision. For more training hints, go to our link, electric dog fence training tips.
Neighbors can use one system to contain several dogs in one area. Many units can contain an area up to 25 acres. For configuration ideas, please see the electric
dog fence installation guide. When multiple dogs are using a fence from Petsafe, they all must wear collars designed for that system so every dog receives appropriate correction.
Using these systems is a wonderful alternative to tying your dog up or locking it in the house for long stretches of time.
